Prolegomenon and Other Random Thoughts

Casa de Garcia Maduro. After the Connecticut, I was hopeful this could be a step in the right direction. They basically take the CT blend and put on a Maduro CT Broadleaf wrapper and use the CT shade for the binder. But this was not to be…

This LEGACY review for the Casa de Garcia Maduro - Toro (5.5 x 50) is based on the journal entry dated 2024-10-21.

Note: My original review format only had a single overall score of 1 to 5 with the “Buy it Again?” value assessment.  This mean’s there’s no sectioned scoring for different factors and I didn’t capture data for my flavor wheel, which may be blank.  If I have journaled the cigar again since I began capturing flavor wheel data, that data will be present.  If the cigar is still available to me, I will eventually replace the legacy review with one in the current format.

The wrapper looked even worse than the CT. Slightly oily, but mostly dry, lumpy, poor seams, etc. Worse, it felt like a rock—super hard. This wasn’t boding well. It had at least one plug in it. I used the PerfecDraw and I struggled to get it in. If you have one, you know how sharp that is. Pulling it back out, instead of getting some long strings of tobacco, it was crumbs… I don’t think they’re using long filler here.

The draw was still nearly impossible, but I gave it my best effort. The ash fell off before the first inch and I hit the first rock-solid section of tobacco. I knocked it out into my ashtray and relit, but it wasn’t getting better. It’s a shame because it was similar to the Connecticut, but a little sweeter with more chocolate flavor.

I gave up on this stick. It was too tightly rolled and never started to properly burn. I think the flavors were going to be an improvement over the Connecticut, but I never got the chance to really try them. I guess that’s the risk with these value smokes: you’re going to hit some really poor construction on some. This was by far the most poorly rolled cigar I’ve had so far.

So to the fire pit it went. 🔥😅

While the review is based off one instance of journaling this cigar; there’s a number of reasons you can have different experiences smoking the same cigar multiple times. A blend can evolve with age (for better or worse), palates evolves, preferences change, and sometimes you just get a bad example!  This section captures the ratings from each journal entry and the related journal photo.  Below you’ll find an aggregate score based on every time the cigar has been journaled. Unless it was a gift or on-off smoke, this section will be updated every time I journal this cigar!
