The Review

This review for the Warped Gellis Family Saunter - Robusto (5.25 x 48) is based on the journal entry dated 2026-08-19

Appearance & Construction (0-3):  Good (3)

This is a cute little guy. It’s hardly the smallest that Warped offers under the Gellis Family label, but it’s petite, bordering on delicate for my bear claws. That said, it does have a delightfully soft and silky Ecuadorian Desflorada wrapper that literally feels like velvet. I’m always relieved when my Ecuadorian Connecticuts have a browner shade of tan to them; whether it’s from the sun, fermenting, or age, darker tans all tend to bode very well for my palate. There are a number of very thin veins, but the seams are clean and tight, while the cigar has a nice overall firmness to it. The bands are detailed, high-quality, and very well done. I always love references to dogs, so Kyle Gellis’s Cane Corso being featured right on the band is a huge plus.​

Draw (0-3) & Burn (0-4):  Good (3) / Great (4)

The draw is perfect and the burn starts beautifully. The ash is a light-to-medium gray with dark accents and tight cracks between medium-spaced striations. The burn line, though, is just 🤌🏻. Razor-sharp, crisp, even side-to-side, and just about as dead-flat as you can possibly get. The ash is stacking beautifully, holding strong right until just before the midpoint where I saw it start to break and safely rolled it off into the ashtray. But a truly fantastic burn here in 92-degree weather with 62% humidity. Oof, welcome to summer in the deep South! 🥵

Flavor Profile (0-5):  Great (4)

Cedar and a salted butter creaminess immediately greet me on light-up. There’s a dry breadiness, similar to corn flakes or white bread, that quickly overtakes the cedar notes, leaving more of an earthy base that is slightly damp and musty. White pepper starts to hit the nasal passages and there’s a strong sourdough component to the breadiness that appears in the first inch. What I’m getting is a soft, buttery, German pretzel vibe. Sourdough, salt, and buttery creaminess, but beautifully earthy around the crust. The white pepper is increasing to a medium and there are notes of that nutmeg and earthy spice you’d associate with a good, spicy mustard. Or fuck it, I’m just hungry for lunch. 😅

The second third starts to bring in more black pepper, and it’s heavily hitting the back of my soft palate with a nice tingle. Salty sourdough and roasted cedar keep trading off, while that sweet, buttery creaminess has become a little drier and more marshmallow-like. The sweetness hasn’t died back; it’s just not as rich on the creamy aspects and is presenting more like a lemon zest at this point. Going back to the pretzel analogy, it’s like that butter glaze has dried up, accentuating the dough notes rather than overpowering them. Likewise, the white and black pepper actively trade off between hitting the nasal passages and the soft palate.

The final third doesn’t bring any real changes. So what do we have? Toasted cedar to salty sourdough, sweet buttery to marshmallow creaminess, mild lemon zest, occasional nuttiness and powdered cocoa, and white-to-black pepper rounded out with a solid mild-to-medium earthiness that is sometimes a little musty. It’s balanced, it’s enjoyable, and it’s incredibly leisurely.

Overall Experience (0-5):  Excellent (5)

It is not the most complex blend in the world, but it is certainly highly enjoyable for what it brings to the table. I like any cigar that genuinely lives up to its name, and the Saunter definitely encourages a much more leisurely, unhurried approach to smoking it. But this is such a crowded Connecticut space, and $17 for a Robusto feels like less of a value proposition. If you love a balanced Connecticut in a slightly smaller vitola, go right for it. If you love Warped, again, highly recommended. I might be personally inclined to go for cigars that offer a little more bang for the buck, but I certainly wouldn’t say no to smoking more of these. The Saunter is a very good cigar; unfortunately, it just doesn’t massively stand out in the crowd, rather just steadily holding its own in a very competitive price segment. That said, I did find a soft spot for the Saunter because Sarto is on the band and I do love my own lazy-ass doggos where a Saunter is a fast pace for them. I am a sucker like that sometimes. 😂
